With the nation’s 250th anniversary fast approaching, many locations in the eastern United States are celebrating their contribution toward American independence and remembering the events which took place along the Atlantic coast a quarter-millennium ago.
It can seem that the honor of having these significant locations is quite exclusive, as these events only occurred in the thirteen original states. Interestingly, I recently realized that our independence was actually won in more than just thirteen states, considering that many battles took place on land that used to be part of the western claims of the thirteen states.
Here is a list of the modern states in which battles of the Revolutionary War occurred:
States in Which Battles of the Revolution Were Fought

- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- New Jersey
- New York
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Vermont
- Virginia
- West Virginia
I find this crazy — even though the United States now has roughly 3.8 times more states than the 13 state that it had at the time, more than half of the current states had battles of the Revolution that occurred on their soil!
Most of the battles of the Revolutionary War did occur on territory owned by one of the thirteen states, however, some of these battles occurred west of the Mississippi River on foreign territory that would later become American.
Which state surprised you the most to hear that it was the location of a Revolutionary War battle?
