How Far from Alaska to Alaska?

When looking at the map recently, I started to notice just how far someone could be from another person in the same state, especially in the case of Alaska.

Often times I consider how long it would take to get from one state to another, but some states are so large that it might take longer to travel from one point in the state to another point in the same state than it would take to travel to another state.

With this in mind, I decided to compose the following list that ranks each state by the distance between its two furthest points from each other (as the crow flies).

NOTE: I was unable to find a source online that specified the maximum distance between two points for each state, therefore, I had to visually inspect each state on a map to select a few sets of points that I thought were the furthest from each other for each state and then use the measure tool on Google Maps to determine which set truly was the furthest.  For this reason, while I believe the following data is decently accurate, there could be some errors in the following list.

  1. Alaska: 2,271 mi
  2. California: 830 mi
  3. Texas: 809 mi
  4. Montana: 629 mi
  5. Florida: 597 mi
  6. Idaho: 563 mi
  7. Nevada: 563 mi
  8. Oklahoma: 533 mi
  9. New Mexico: 522 mi
  10. Michigan: 510 mi
  11. North Carolina: 501 mi
  12. Tennessee: 498 mi
  13. Nebraska: 497 mi
  14. Arizona: 485 mi
  15. Minnesota: 476 mi
  16. Virginia: 474 mi
  17. Colorado: 467 mi
  18. Oregon: 461 mi
  19. Missouri: 456 mi
  20. Kansas: 452 mi
  21. Wyoming: 449 mi
  22. South Dakota: 445 mi
  23. Utah: 436 mi
  24. Kentucky: 425 mi
  25. New York: 416 mi
  26. North Dakota: 408 mi
  27. Washington: 402 mi
  28. Louisiana: 401 mi
  29. Illinois: 393 mi
  30. Hawaii: 387 mi
  31. Georgia: 381 mi
  32. Alabama: 365 mi
  33. Wisconsin: 363 mi
  34. Mississippi: 348 mi
  35. Iowa: 346 mi
  36. Arkansas: 326 mi
  37. Pennsylvania: 326 mi
  38. Indiana: 323 mi
  39. Maine: 320 mi
  40. Ohio: 300 mi
  41. West Virginia: 277 mi
  42. Maryland: 256 mi
  43. South Carolina: 241 mi
  44. Massachusetts: 198 mi
  45. New Hampshire: 191 mi
  46. Vermont: 181 mi
  47. New Jersey: 168 mi
  48. Connecticut: 120 mi
  49. Delaware: 100 mi
  50. Rhode Island: 61 mi

Based on this information, Alaska, unsurprisingly, is the state with the greatest distance between two points within its boundaries.  I also found it interesting to see that the average maximum distance between two points in a state is 439 miles.

Which state’s two most distant points are your favorite?
