Handcrafted Raspberry Soda

I have featured many brands and flavors of carbonated beverages that can be purchased at most stores, but this beverage is an exception, since it is almost certainly not available in stores around you despite its simplicity.

This summery drink is quite tasty and refreshing; it’s mildly tart, yet pleasantly sweet. It tastes like the combination of raspberries and seltzer, which should not be a surprise, considering that the bulk of the ingredients is one and a half pounds of fresh raspberries.

The raspberries that I used to make the syrup.

This is one of the few carbonated beverages that is naturally delicious and a healthier option. To make it, I merely turned fresh raspberries that I grew at my home into a syrup, then I poured a couple ounces of the syrup into a glass and topped it off with plain seltzer. The recipe I used to make the syrup came from The Soda Fountain Cookbook, which was made by the Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain in Brooklyn, New York.

You could also make a syrup from frozen raspberries or just about any other fruit; if you wanted a blend of flavors, you could mix any combination of syrups, the sky’s the limit. Crafting your own carbonated beverage does require some time to make or purchase a syrup and then prepare the beverage, however, the advantage is that you can form whatever flavor you want, plus you know exactly what is in the beverage if you make your own syrup.

Though this beverage contains just enough cane sugar to form a syrup, it has about a third less added sugar than the average soft drink; this raspberry beverage also contains no preservatives and no added coloring or flavoring; yes, all of its deep color comes from the berries. If this beverage is consumed in moderation, like any dessert should be, then it poses little hazard to your health.

My favorite attribute of a handcrafted beverage such as this one is that the flavor is nearly identical to that of the fruit; there is no artificial taste. How can you get any better than the real flavor?

Have you had handcrafted soft drinks, and if so, what was the most unique flavor that you tried?
