It is time for a change of pace from the colas that I have been featuring recently, therefore I have a more exclusive beverage to share with you: Sun Drop. It is not nearly as new as the Coca-Cola Creations beverages and not as historical as Classic Coca-Cola, but this beverage is interesting and delicious, complete with a fun name and unique design.
Sun Drop is not as ubiquitous as Coca-Cola or Pepsi; it appears to be mostly popular in the Southern United States, besides some popularity in the Midwest, particularly in the northern areas of either region. People who enjoy this flavor that are outside Sun Drop’s bottling areas pay large amounts of money to have the beverage shipped to them. Sun Drop has reportedly been sent to US soldiers serving in Afghanistan by their families.
Keurig Dr. Pepper now owns Sun Drop which launched a new campaign in the early 2010s, attempting to distribute Sun Drop nationwide.
What does Sun Drop Taste Like?
Sun Drop’s classic flavor is a combination of lemon, lime, and orange; the idea of a citrus flavored drink was invented by a businessman named Charles Lazier in 1928, predating most citrus beverages. Lazier wrote the recipe for a caffeinated version of Sun Drop on a small piece of paper while riding around the streets of St. Louis, Missouri, in 1949; Sun Drop was finally introduced in Washington DC in the year 1951.
The company offers a new flavor as of 2014, Sun Drop Cherry Lemon, where they present a variation of their design which replaces their iconic green color with red. I may explore this flavor in a future post.
Sun Drop is truly delicious and unlike any other citrus beverage that I have tasted; I definitely recommend trying this one if you haven’t already, and if you do like Sun Drop, consume it again on another occasion. It’s an exclusive beverage with which I can never become bored.
Have you ever heard of Sun Drop? If you have tried it, what was your opinion?
